Strengthening diversity, equity, and inclusion through the power of books

Book Club Picks

Whether it be fleeing a hostile situation or seeking opportunities for higher education, people immigrate to other countries in hopes of a better life. Immigrants endure the unique struggles of assimilating into their new countries while still maintaining their ethnic and cultural roots, all while living in a society that may not always accept them. Join us this month as we unpack the immigrant experience with "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan and "I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter" by Erika L. Sanchez!

"SoCal Book Club has offered a way to edify myself about perspectives and circumstances I had not considered before through pieces of literature that differed greatly from the curriculum taught at the high school level. Additionally, the discourse we shared following the reading impacted me immensely, in understanding the conceptual meaning and in comprehending the feelings and testimonies of others who I cannot relate to. Because of these resources, I have not only been the recipient of knowledge, but I am better prepared and motivated to improve the communities I am part of"
